All about the Akal Takht Amritsar

The highest political and governing body of the Sikhs is called Akal Takht. It is one of the Sikhs' Five Takhts. The Guru is claimed to have played there as a little child.

#Trivia: The 6th Guru, Guru Hargobind ji, constructed it as a symbol of defiance against the oppression of the monarchs of the 17th century.

The Jathedar, the top spokesperson in the Sikh community, resides in these Takhts, which serve as centres of authority and power in the community. The Akal Takht is intended to represent governmental authority and justice where the Sikh people's spiritual and material concerns can be discussed.

One of the Akal Takht customs is for the priest to recite the Rehras Sahib, evening prayer and Ardas while holding a sword. Visitors can view the priceless weapons used by Sikh soldiers and gurus every evening.

Every evening, the Guru Granth Sahib is still brought here, and it is transferred to the Golden Temple every morning. Visitors are welcome to observe the ceremony of putting the book to bed.

History of the Akal Takht

Without the aid of a worker or an architect, Guru Hargobind Ji, Bhai Gurdas Ji, and Baba Buddha Ji constructed the structure themselves. To establish the foundation for the Harmandir Sahib, excavation was done at the Amrit-Sarovar, where the raised mound of soil was created.

During Operation Bluestar, the Takht sustained damage. Later, the Indian government rebuilt the building and named it Sarkari Takht.

Architecture of the Akal Takht

In defiance of Emperor Jahangir, the elevated platform, initially 9 feet tall, was increased to its current height of 12 feet. Ranjit Singh expanded the building by three levels and decorated the Takht in gold.

The building currently has five stories: a gold-leafed dome, gilded interiors, and exquisitely painted wall panels. It is also inlaid with marble.

Here, remnants of lime plaster were decorated with flower designs in the Mughal style. The structure has been compared to Venice's Piazza Saint Marco, where the Doge's Palace looks out onto the Grand Canal.

In the open courtyard, Akal Takht is situated similarly in front of the Darshani Deori.
