The city of Amritsar, which is currently divided by railway lines, was established in 1577 by the fourth Sikh Guru, Ram Das. Visitors to this lovely city have a lot to choose from. Besides one of the most important tourist attractions of Amritsar, the Golden Temple, you can visit several other prominent locations and regale the beauty of this city.

You can also visit the Punjab State War Memorial and Museum, pay respects to the Jallianwala Bagh massacre, or observe the Amritsari people's simplicity and humility. Everything here is worth absorbing.

Amritsar's old city area is accessed by at least five "gates" or arches. One of them is known as the 'Gandhi Gate'.

It is a historic gate built in a British colony and provides access to the walled city of Amritsar from the west.

All about the Gandhi Gate Amritsar

The well-known gate was built in 1873 on the west side of Amritsar. As a tribute to the former deputy commissioner CH Hall, the gate is also known as Hall Gate. It is presently known as "Gandhi Gate."

Even though it was renamed Gandhi Gate after India gained independence, and the new name is visibly written on it, the previous name still exists. The Punjab tourism department has mentioned the former name on boards on both of its sides due to its popularity.

You will have to cross a major junction and pass-through this entrance gate on your route to the Harmandir Sahib or Golden Temple, which is still approximately 2 km away. Although there are barricades and a police patrol at the entry, traffic does enter via the gate.

On top of the Gandhi Gate comes the Gurbani phrase "Amritsar Sifti Da Ghar" (Amritsar is the home of values).

A renowned market is located between this gate and the iconic Town Hall structure known as Hall Bazaar.
